Engineering Design Project Highlights

Metro Vancouver Regional District MVRD Grit Pump Replacement Airy Point Engineering

Metro Vancouver Regional District Grit Pump Replacement (2025)

The Metro Vancouver Regional District (MVRD) operates the Iona Island Wastewater Treatment Plant (IIWWTP) in Richmond, British Columbia. Airy Point Engineering was engaged to develop a front-end engineering design (FEED) and cost estimate for the replacement and relocation of Grit Pump #1.

Scope of Work:

  • Site Investigation & Design Basis: Conducted a site visit and developed a design strategy to replace the aging pump with a standardized model, improving accessibility and minimizing piping changes.
  • Multidisciplinary Engineering Review: Evaluated mechanical, electrical, and civil infrastructure, including pump sizing, piping layout, MCC capacity, and structural support requirements.
  • Redline Drawings & Documentation: Provided redlined drawings and technical documentation to support installation planning, including piping sections, P&IDs, and electrical schematics.
  • Cost Estimating & Execution Planning: Delivered an AACE Class 4 estimate for engineering, materials, and installation, including budget pricing for equipment, piping, valves, and electrical components.

Airy Point Engineering provided strategic engineering support to help MVRD modernize critical infrastructure at IIWWTP, improving system reliability, maintainability, and operational efficiency.

Metro Vancouver Regional District MVRD Sludge Thickener Overflow Box Airy Point Engineering

Metro Vancouver Regional District Sludge Thickener Overflow Box Assessment (2025)

The Metro Vancouver Regional District (MVRD) operates the Iona Island Wastewater Treatment Plant (IIWWTP) in Richmond, British Columbia. Airy Point Engineering was engaged to conduct a site visit and structural assessment of the sludge thickener overflow box to support future access improvements and repair planning.

Scope of Work:

  • Site Investigation: Conducted a field review of the overflow box structure, including visual inspection of accessible concrete surfaces.
  • Structural Assessment: Evaluated deterioration, cracking, and exposed rebar conditions; confirmed soundness of exterior concrete and identified inaccessible areas requiring further evaluation.
  • Technical Reporting: Delivered a sealed technical memo outlining findings and recommending non-destructive testing (NDT) to assess internal wall conditions.
  • Planning Support: Provided recommendations for next steps, including NDT methodologies and design considerations for future access openings.

Airy Point Engineering provided critical insights to support MVRD in planning safe and effective upgrades to the sludge thickener overflow box, helping reduce uncertainty and align future engineering work with operational constraints.

Airy Point Engineering Gygax Associates BC Ferries Hydraulics Design and Engineering

Gygax Engineering Associates Ltd. Hydraulic System Performance Specification (2024)

Gygax Engineering Associates Ltd. (GEA) operates in Vancouver, British Columbia, providing structural engineering services. Airy Point Engineering was engaged to develop a hydraulic system performance specification for BC Ferries (BCF) port upgrades on the Crofton to Vesuvius route.

Scope of Work:

  • Hydraulic System Performance Specification: Prepared a comprehensive specification to ensure upgrades met industry and BCF standards.
  • Site Layout Drawings: Development of site layout drawings for Crofton and Vesuvius Berths, ensuring compliance with provided standards and examples.
  • HPU-PLC Enclosure Review: Review and update the system HPU enclosure and provided a simple hydraulic piping plan.

Unfortunately following the detailed review and provision of a hydraulic performance specification, this project was paused by BC Ferries. Airy Point Engineering hopes to continue detailed engineering support to GEA, if and when BC Ferries reactivates this initiative.
